BROTHER & SISTER – LAYERING MEMORIES - PART 2 – NEW DELHI - INDIA

Tushar Kumar

Tushar is Priya’s younger brother. Invited by his sister to show his work, Tushar and his wife Arty specialize in NUNO felting when fine silk is trapped between two layers of cashmere wool, creating a beautiful effect of powder snow on the shoulders. In this array of neutral shades, Tushar only compromise to colors are contrasted brown border of alpaca or black merino wool. Working only with natural colors, the soft cashmere wool is felted in different weights ranging from from baby blankets to throws and shawls. These pieces show the work of an artist, his love and care, passion and the hands of skilled artisans.
I find there is a fascination and systematization to relate to Japanese aesthetics through out Indo –China. Tushar is no exception and his beautiful pieces, wrapped in pure chiffon veil adding to the ethereal aspect of the whole range, remind me of as Japan mastery of perfection.

“Luxury for me is comfort, the comfort with in and my attempt to perfection through natural hand made work and care.” said Tushar. “As for Muslim, only Lord is perfection, imperfection is human - When we were young, my father use to tell us a story of this Chinese emperor who hired an artist to paint the most beautiful fresco in his palace. The artist worked for years, always trying never ending his work. The emperor grow restless and asked the artist to give his final brush stroke but as soon as he did, every thing vanished and flew away.
We live in imperfection and can only attempt to perfection with humility - only human arrogance can pretend otherwise.”

Tushar is also a very knowledgeable person on Indian crafts and trades. He told me about the story of Dabu, mud-resist print techniques by the Rabari community in Gujarat. Wearing only black wool in temperature raising up to 50 degrees, the Rabari print and stitche their cloth in beautiful bright colors to dye them black, as a sign of morning to lord Krishna, knowing within the colors is inside for them only. A wise insight on joy and life itself.

Tushar words are like his world, colorful and multi-cultural within, his beautiful pieces and choice of neutral tones shooting the never-ending quest of an artist for perfection.
