What will you need a lacquered piece for nowadays?
Sachiko Eda's challenge, a skilled dedicated lacquer artist, is to find a new necessity for her pieces in today's living.
She has learn lacquering from her Master, Murose Kazumi - a Japanese living treasure.
The sap, coming from the Urushi lacquer tree is a poisonous and allergic substance not to be touch until it dries so Sachiko first cover herself with several layers of gloves before starting her long process which is to prepare her piece bases with an artisan, then the lacquer she makes her self by mixing pine-tree charcoal and lacquer sap then comes the layering up to 40 times, with special brushes made of Asian woman hairs, and each time dried into a chest at 70% humidity for about 7 hours. A long process that makes her pieces "singular luxuries".
Ikea and Conran shop have changed the way we live but what will make it a necessity for us to use lacquer objects again beside their simple precious beauty ? if you have an idea, pass it on ! Sachiko's searching for ideas.
